Cost is one of the biggest things holding people back from getting qualified, especially for anyone already juggling work, family, and everything else. If you’ve been looking at an NCFE CACHE course and wondering whether there’s help available to cover the cost, here’s what you actually need to know about funding options, including the government-backed Advanced Learner Loan.
What Is an Advanced Learner Loan?
An Advanced Learner Loan (sometimes called a 19+ Advanced Learner Loan) is a government-backed loan, administered by Student Finance England, that helps cover the cost of approved further education courses at Level 3 to Level 6. It’s designed to remove the upfront cost barrier for adults wanting to train, retrain, or move up in their career.
A few key things about how it works:
- You don’t have to be young to qualify. There’s no upper age limit, and you just need to be 19 or over on the first day of your course.
- Your income and credit history aren’t checked. Eligibility doesn’t depend on how much you earn, and there are no credit checks when you apply.
- You don’t repay anything upfront. The loan is paid directly to your training provider, and you don’t start repaying until your income is over a set threshold.
- Repayments are income-based, not fixed. You’ll repay a percentage of your income above the threshold, similar to how student loans for university work, and payments pause automatically if your income drops below it.
- Residency requirements apply. Generally, you’ll need to have been living in the UK (or Channel Islands/Isle of Man) for at least 3 years before starting your course, alongside meeting UK nationality or settled status requirements.
Which Courses Does It Cover?
Advanced Learner Loans can cover approved Level 3 to Level 6 qualifications, which includes vocational and technical qualifications like NCFE CACHE diplomas, alongside A Levels and Access to Higher Education diplomas. It doesn’t cover full degrees or other higher education courses with their own separate student finance system.
Importantly, not every course at every provider is automatically eligible. Whether a specific course qualifies for loan funding depends on both the qualification itself being “designated” for loans, and the training provider being registered with Student Finance England to offer loan-funded places. You can browse our full range of NCFE CACHE qualifications here, and your training provider should be able to confirm eligibility directly, giving you a Learning and Funding Information Letter if applicable, which you’ll need to complete your loan application.

Is There an Alternative If You're Only Doing a Level 3?
If you’re studying a Level 3 qualification specifically, it’s worth asking your training provider whether they offer Adult Skills Fund (ASF) grant funding as an alternative. Unlike a loan, a grant doesn’t need to be repaid at all. You generally can’t get both an Advanced Learner Loan and a grant for the same course, so it’s worth checking grant eligibility with your provider before applying for a loan.
How Do You Actually Apply?
If your course and provider are eligible, the process generally looks like this:
- Confirm with your training provider that your specific course is approved for loan funding.
- Your provider issues a Learning and Funding Information Letter confirming your place and the funding details.
- You apply online through Student Finance England, using the information from that letter.
- Once approved, Student Finance England pays the agreed amount directly to your training provider.
- You start your course without paying course fees upfront.
You can typically borrow up to 4 Advanced Learner Loans across your lifetime for different courses, and you don’t have to borrow the full cost of a course. You can choose to pay part of it yourself and borrow the rest.
What If a Loan Isn’t the Right Fit for You?
An Advanced Learner Loan is a real financial commitment, even with income-based repayments, so it’s worth thinking it through properly before applying. If it’s not right for you, Easy Training 123 offers a straightforward alternative: a minimum first instalment of £200 to secure your place, then £100 monthly instalments until the course is paid off in full, without needing to go through a loan application at all.
What to Check Before You Apply
Before assuming you can fund an NCFE CACHE course through an Advanced Learner Loan, it’s always worth contacting our team directly to confirm:
- Whether they are registered with Student Finance England to accept Advanced Learner Loan payments
- Whether your specific course is currently designated as loan-eligible
- What alternative payment options they offer if a loan isn’t available or isn’t right for you
