Are NCFE CACHE Qualifications Regulated?

  • September 30, 2026

Yes, NCFE CACHE qualifications are regulated, and it’s worth understanding exactly what that means, because “regulated” is a specific, checkable status, not just a reassuring word providers attach to their courses. Here’s how the regulation actually works, and how you can verify it for yourself rather than just taking a provider’s word for it.

Who Regulates NCFE CACHE Qualifications?

NCFE CACHE qualifications are regulated by Ofqual, short for the Office of Qualifications and Examinations Regulation, the UK government body responsible for regulating qualifications, examinations, and assessments in England. Ofqual doesn’t create or teach qualifications itself. Its role is to set the rules that awarding organisations, like NCFE, must follow, and to monitor them to make sure those rules are actually being met, on an ongoing basis, not just at launch.

To be allowed to award regulated qualifications at all, an organisation has to be formally recognised by Ofqual, meeting requirements around financial stability, quality assurance processes, and the integrity of its assessment methods. NCFE is one of the organisations that holds this recognition, and it’s what allows it to award qualifications, including those under the NCFE CACHE brand, that carry genuine regulatory status.

What Framework Are They Regulated Under?

Regulated qualifications in England, including NCFE CACHE diplomas, currently sit within the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF). This framework classifies qualifications by size and level, from Entry Level through to Level 8, and requires them to be built from clearly defined, credit-bearing units. Older frameworks, including NVQs and the QCF, have both been replaced by the RQF over the years, though the underlying qualifications they represented have generally continued in updated form.

Ofqual doesn’t create or teach qualifications itself. Its role is to set the rules that awarding organisations, like NCFE, must follow, and to monitor them to make sure those rules are actually being met, on an ongoing basis, not just at launch.

Every Regulated Qualification Has Its Own Number

This is the most direct, practical way to verify regulation for yourself. Every genuinely regulated qualification is issued a unique qualification number by Ofqual. You can search for any qualification, by its title, its number, or the awarding organisation delivering it, directly on the Ofqual Register of Regulated Qualifications, and confirm exactly what’s registered: the qualification’s level, its credit value, its current status, and which organisation is approved to award it.

If a provider advertises a course as “NCFE CACHE” or claims Ofqual regulation but can’t point you to a qualification number that checks out on the register, that’s a genuine red flag worth pausing on before you enrol or pay anything.

What Regulation Actually Involves, Ongoing

Regulation isn’t a one-time approval that happens once and is then forgotten. Ofqual continues to monitor recognised awarding organisations on an ongoing basis, including:

  • External quality assurance, checking that assessment and marking standards are being applied consistently, not just by one tutor’s personal judgement
  • Compliance with qualification-specific conditions, ensuring the qualification continues to meet the standards it was originally regulated against
  • Investigation powers, where Ofqual can act if standards slip, including requiring corrective action from the awarding organisation

This ongoing oversight is what separates a regulated qualification from an informal certificate: there’s a real, external check happening continuously, not just a badge earned once and left unexamined.

What Regulation Does and Doesn’t Guarantee

Regulation confirms that a qualification meets a consistent national standard in how it’s designed, assessed, and awarded. It’s worth being precise about what that does and doesn’t mean:

  • It does mean the qualification has been through a formal approval process and continues to be monitored against defined standards.
  • It does mean you can independently verify its existence and status at any time, rather than relying on marketing claims alone.
  • It doesn’t mean every training provider delivering that qualification offers identical levels of tutor support, course structure, or pricing. Regulation covers the qualification itself; providers can still differ significantly in how they deliver it.
  • It doesn’t automatically mean international recognition, since regulation is a UK-specific status; recognition in other countries depends on local decisions, which is a related but separate question.

Why This Distinction Matters When Choosing a Provider

Because regulation applies to the qualification, not the provider’s delivery quality, it’s worth checking both separately. Confirm the qualification itself is genuinely regulated using the Ofqual Register, and separately look into what the specific training provider actually offers: tutor support, resubmission policy, course length, and cost. A regulated qualification delivered poorly is still frustrating to complete, even though the underlying certificate is legitimate.

The instincts above, noticing, listening, staying steady, showing up consistently, aren’t things a qualification teaches you from scratch. They’re what you bring with you. The qualification is just what turns that into a recognised, paid career.

What Recognising Yourself in These Signs Actually Means

If two or three of these felt like they were describing you, that’s worth taking seriously, not brushing off as a nice thought for another day. It doesn’t mean you have to make a decision today. It means the pull you’ve been feeling toward this kind of work isn’t random, and it’s worth actually exploring rather than continuing to talk yourself out of it.
