Short answer: an NVQ is a type of qualification, and NCFE CACHE is an awarding organisation. They are not like-for-like. NCFE CACHE awards qualifications, and an NVQ is one old style of qualification that many people still talk about.
This guide explains the difference in plain English, so you can pick the right course.
What Is an NVQ?
NVQ stands for National Vocational Qualification. NVQs are practical, work-based awards, and you complete them in the workplace by building a portfolio of evidence from your real job. An assessor watches you work, asks questions, and checks you meet the standard for your role.
NVQs were popular for years in care, childcare, hospitality, and construction. If you have heard people say “I did my NVQ 3”, that is what they mean.
What Is NCFE CACHE?
NCFE is an awarding organisation. NCFE is not a qualification in itself. It is the body that creates and awards them. CACHE is the NCFE brand for qualifications in care, health, and education.
So when you study an NCFE CACHE qualification, such as the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care, you earn a regulated diploma awarded by NCFE under its CACHE name.
NCFE CACHE awards qualifications, and an NVQ is one old style of qualification that many people still talk about.
Why Do People Still Say "NVQ"?
The system changed, but the habit stayed. NVQs were replaced by the Qualifications and Credit Framework around 2010, though the NVQ title was kept for some industries with well-known qualifications. Then Ofqual introduced the Regulated Qualifications Framework (RQF) on 1 October 2015.
Today, most care and childcare qualifications are called Awards, Certificates, or Diplomas. Employers, managers, and job adverts often still use “NVQ” as shorthand for “a Level 2 or Level 3 care qualification”.
Are NCFE CACHE Qualifications Regulated?
Yes. NCFE CACHE qualifications are regulated, which means an official body checks their quality. You can read more in our guide: Are NCFE CACHE qualifications regulated?
Regulation matters because it protects you. It confirms the qualification has a set level, a set size, and a standard that employers can trust.
Is an NCFE CACHE Level 3 the Same as an NVQ Level 3?
In level, yes. The old NVQ 3 and today’s Level 3 qualification sit at the same level. When a job advert asks for “NVQ 3 or equivalent”, a Level 3 qualification on the current RQF is what it usually means.
The level tells you how difficult a qualification is. It does not tell you the subject, so always check the title and content as well. You can see how levels compare on the GOV.UK qualification levels page.
How Are They Assessed?
NVQs were assessed almost entirely at work. You built a portfolio, an assessor observed you, and you showed you could do the job.
NCFE CACHE courses can work in a similar way, especially diplomas in care and childcare, where you need to show your skills in a real setting. Some units also use written tasks and knowledge questions. The exact method depends on the qualification, so read each course page before you apply.
Which Do Employers Prefer?
Employers care that your qualification is regulated, at the right level, and relevant to the job. Most do not mind whether it says “NVQ” or “Diploma”.
If you hold an older NVQ, it is still valid. If you are starting now, you will study a current qualification, because NVQs are no longer the main route. Choosing an NCFE CACHE qualification puts you on the current system, which employers know well.
Which Should You Choose?
For most people starting today, the question answers itself. You cannot take a new “NVQ” in the old style, so you choose the current qualification at the level you need. Here is a simple guide:
- Working in adult care: The Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care suits care workers who want to move into senior roles.
- Moving into management: The Level 5 Diploma in Leadership & Management for Adult Care is for people who lead or want to lead a care service.
- Working with young children: The Level 3 Diploma for Working in the Early Years Sector is the childcare route.
You can see every option on our NCFE courses page.
What Does It Cost?
Prices vary a lot between providers, so it pays to compare what is included. Our guide on how much an NCFE CACHE qualification costs explains what to look for.
