Do You Need Maths and English GCSEs to Work in Childcare or Care?

If you left school without GCSEs in Maths and English, or you’re not confident your grades were good enough, it’s worth knowing this stops a lot of people from even looking into a career in childcare or care, often without needing to. Here’s the honest, straightforward answer, because the reality is more encouraging than most people assume.

The Short Answer

To enrol on a Level 3 qualification like the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care, the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for Working in the Early Years Sector, or the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare, you generally don’t need GCSEs at all. No previous qualifications are required to start any of these courses. You just need to be at least 16, and for most learners, access to a relevant work, volunteering, or placement setting.

So if GCSE grades were the reason you’d written off a career in this sector, that barrier likely doesn’t exist for the qualification itself.

Where GCSE English Actually Does Matter

There’s one specific area where it does come up, and it’s worth understanding properly rather than being put off by a vague sense that “you need GCSEs for this.” If you’re working towards becoming an Early Years Educator and want to be counted within the Level 3 staff-to-child ratio in a nursery or early years setting, most settings will expect you to also hold a Level 2 English qualification, such as a GCSE grade C or 4, or an equivalent Functional Skills qualification, alongside your Level 3 diploma.

This requirement is specific to ratio counting in early years settings, tied to the Early Years Foundation Stage (EYFS) framework, rather than a blanket rule across every care or childcare role. It doesn’t stop you from starting or completing the diploma itself, but it can affect whether you’re immediately counted as a fully qualified Level 3 practitioner in a nursery’s staffing ratios once you’re working.

What If You Don’t Have a GCSE in English?

You have options, and none of them require going back to school:

  • Functional Skills qualifications are a widely accepted equivalent to GCSE English and Maths, specifically designed for adults returning to study, and can usually be completed alongside or before your main diploma.
  • You can still start and complete your Level 3 diploma without it, and work towards the English requirement separately if and when it becomes relevant to your specific role or setting.
  • Many employers will support you to gain this alongside your job, since they benefit from having you properly qualified and counted in ratio just as much as you do.

What About Adult Care and Residential Childcare?

For qualifications like the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma in Adult Care or the NCFE CACHE Level 3 Diploma for Residential Childcare, there isn’t an equivalent GCSE English requirement tied to staff ratios the way there is in early years. Entry to both is based on being able to access a relevant work or placement setting, not on holding specific GCSE grades. Always worth double-checking with your specific employer, since individual workplaces can set their own expectations, but it isn’t a qualification-wide barrier.

Don’t Self-Select Out Before You’ve Actually Checked

This is genuinely one of the most common, and most avoidable, reasons people never look into a career in care or childcare. A bad memory of school, or grades that didn’t come out the way you’d hoped, can feel like a closed door, when in reality it usually isn’t one at all for the qualification you’d actually need to start.

If you’re unsure whether your specific situation, whether that’s your GCSE grades, your age, or your current job, would be a barrier to starting, the most reliable thing to do is ask directly rather than guess and rule yourself out.
